The stock conti's are garbage and wear out in 6-8k miles. I replaced them with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4's and they've been great.

Pros: have been great
Cons: stock conti's garbage
Mileage: 7000 km

Pirelli Tires

I am on my third different set of 19" M+S tires on my 2017 Golf R - and I am also a Tahoe area skier - first I had the Continental ExtremeContact DWS - they were good. Then I tried the Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus Revised Compound X -- they were better -- actually one time I went over Mt Rose in a white-out blizzard, on top of at least 2" of ice, and the Pirellis gave me great traction and handling.

Pros: great traction and handling

We put the Viking Contact 7's on our 2021 Golf. My 2019 Golf R has Nokian Haka R2's. Winter performance for the two tires is basically indistinquishable to me, which is very high praise as the Nokians have long been considered the best winter tire money can buy. The fact that the VC's are so much cheaper means that if I had to buy new winter tires right now for the R I would for sure get the VC's. Can't go wrong with them.

Pros: indistinguishable winter performance, cheaper price

Continental Tires

Hey, no these Continental DWS 06's are quite good in snow, not sure why any of the car nerds on here would even doubt their ability. I've driven them in 6/8/10" of snow before and have never had any issue--though I'm driving a 4Motion Golf.

Pros: quite good in snow, no issues

BRIDGESTONE Tires

I had the Bridgestone 970ASes. They have incredible consistency which is the huge plus over a straight summer needing warmup before it really sticks. Wet grip is almost the same as dry. They were the best tires I had on my caravan and golf, you can get by a winter with them if you don't have a second set of wheels.

Pros: incredible consistency, good wet grip, good for winter

Just put a set of DWS06's on my Golf R. They are good and comfy and have "enough" grip but definitely not as grippy as the summer tires they replaced.

Pros: good, comfy, enough grip
Cons: not as grippy as summer tires

MICHELIN Tires

I had the AS3+ on my MK7 and loved them. Car handled like it was on rails. The snow performance was not amazing. I just replaced them with the new AS4 and the turn in and handling doesn’t feel as crisp. It’s more mushy than the old version.

Pros: car handled like rails
Cons: mushy turn in

Nokia Tires

Hate to be a neighsayer, but I've haven't been really impressed with the Nokian Hakkas. For all the praise they get on the forums, I was pretty disappointed with how they performed. I live in Central NY so we get tons of snow, so I got to test them out in a variety of conditions and they never really seemed to have traction. I had a set of 195 wide studless tires on my Golf. Upgraded to a GTI and the previous owner threw in a set of 225 studded Hakkas with the car. So I've tried these studded and studless, and have tried narrow and wide tires. I'm looking to try some Blizzaks this year if I can get my hands on them. A family member had them on their FWD Audi and the traction on them seemed really impressive; we were driving on a road that was completely covered in snow and he was swerving left and right and the car rode like it was on rails.

Cons: not impressed, disappointed with performance, never seemed to have traction
