Well if it matters I just hit 108k miles on my k03s. Been chipped since around 60k. Added a tbe at around 80k. I used whatever the dealer told me to use for my warranty period (50k) changed every 5k miles. I switched to full synthetic since then and still change every 5k. Change the plugs every 40k until I switched to the NGK 7Es which I change every 10k. Timing belt every 60k, fuel filter every 50 along with tranny fluid. I just hit 108k yesterday and I still have the original clutch and dv.
In my '00 Golf it lasted 189,000 miles. 174,000 miles chipped.
I run 155/80/13 Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 and haven't been stuck yet. Those tires are the best hands down and are studdable.
Primarily you want thin and narrow. I ran all season Falken-512 195 50 15 last winter and had no problems.
Here is a recent review from the MK4 Golf & Jetta Forum. It was using the 16.5 Steel Billet Flywheel (1.8T) and a stock 02M Sachs clutch kit. Pedal feels exactly as it did stock, and as it should since the Sachs kit is an OEM replacement. Engagement with the lightweight flywheel however is very crisp and responsive. The car itself actually runs and idles MUCH better with the 16lb flywheel and believe it or not, the chatter is very, VERY minimal. Any chatter is only audible from the outside of the car, if you listen carefully. To give you an idea of how feint it is, I've heard Miatas with louder valve noise, and Injectors louder than what I suspect is the actual chatter. All in all, the price is right, the performance is there and a great upgrade for everyone. Still very daily driveable and i'm very glad I dealt with James.
I've slacked on some maintenance, but did the timing belt and oil changes and I have 131k and still running strong.
I had crossdrilled Zimmermans on my Golf...didn't notice any noise from them..but did notice faster pad wear ....
about 4 weeks ago i did a 10w 30 mobil 1 synthetic oil change in my obd1 vr6 mk2. i find with this i can hear more of what is going on under the hood and may b i'm getting parranoid over normal noises that are just amplified b/c of the intake everything coming from the motor seems louder. lifters i'm assuming esspecially when motor is cold. but oddly there is also a weird \"diesel\" sound...pinging?...around 3200 rpm.. Nothing before or after once motor is warm i notice it as well during coasting deceleration.
Absolute garbage.. cheap, and you get what you pay for.
