OEM Volkswagen Cabin filter

No, your MKIII probably never came with a cabin air filter from the VW Factory. The MKIII Owner's Manual shows the cabin air filter, but it had to be an option that nobody took. Some people have retrofitted their MKIIIs with cabin air filter parts from MKIVs (part look exactly like the parts pictured in the MKIII Owner's Manual. Very simple upgrade, you just have to remove the right side cowl from under the hood, take off the two plastic nuts that hold the MKIII ventilation system plastic screen in place, replace with the MKIV filter base, place a filter on top, had secure the filter in place with the snap on plastic filter retainer/holder.

Pros: very simple upgrade

OEM Volkswagen Air filter
Insan3Vr6
  • Visible dirt:
Rating 4.0

This. You can even just cut up a conventional air filter from target or something and throw it on there. Better than nothing. But the mk3.5 - mk4 ones are plug and play, and relatively cheap.

Pros: plug and play, relatively cheap
Cons: better than nothing
Vehicle: Volkswagen Golf

HUCO Ignition coil
ooobombz
  • Starting:
Rating 5.0

I had the same deal, but none of the similar error codes. Verdict: it's probably your ignition coil. Overtime they crack SOOOOO SLIGHTLY that they let in moisture and you're boned. I snagged the Huco cheap one, been fixed ever since. I finally saw the cracks in the old one when I took it off and it was easy to change. I have a 1997 Golf GTI 2.0 8v

Pros: easy to change, fixed issue
Cons: cracks let in moisture

GRAF Water pump
bigdave79
  • Leaks:
  • Noise:
Rating 1.0

The stock pump failed back in Feb 2010, so i ordered a GRAF pump with metal impeller from ECS Tuning. Purchase was made on 1/27/10, parts got here on 2/03/10, and I installed pump late Feb 2010. Mileage was 127,257 when pump, timing belt, tensioner were done. In the middle of 2010, a loud grinding started at the front passenger side of the engine. I took everything apart and found the water pump with bearing grease or some waxy chunky crap all over the outside of it and on the inside of the timing belt cover like it splattered, and the pump leaking from the shaft. Car now has 135,362 miles on it, so thats complete pump failure within 8,069 miles.

Cons: pump failure within 8,069 miles
Mileage: 8069 km
