Water pump OEM BMW or OEM Volkswagen

OEM Volkswagen Water pump

With these cars, it’s less so staying on top of the regular service items from the dealer - and more so staying educated on all the little unspoken chickenshit maintenance items that VW doesn’t outwardly talk about.

Cons: unspoken maintenance items
Vehicle: Volkswagen

OEM Volkswagen Water pump

I actually just changed the pump on my 2018. With the pump/thermostat assembly, and a collection of specific tools, it cost me ~$900. I was quoted 2k by a dealer so I saved a good chunk of change. All-in-all the job is straightforward, save plenty of headache with disconnecting hoses and wire clips.

Pros: straightforward job
Cons: disconnecting hoses, wire clips

My 17 S is sitting at 108k. Only issues I’ve had outside of normal maintenance has been a water pump at 102k and cam magnets at 103k. It’s been the model of reliability and its nearly still as tight as it was when new.

Pros: model of reliability
Cons: water pump, cam magnets
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 108000 km

OEM BMW Water pump

Electric water pump on my BMW was £436.54 fitted at a BMW specialist (not dealership) OEM pump fitted, the same pump for me to buy and fit myself (no chance) was £600+ on Euro Car Parts

Cons: expensive, difficult to fit
Vehicle: BMW

I had an 2001 740iL that I traded an old truck for. The electronics are kind of a nightmare, the water pump has a plastic impeller that likes to randomly explode and shoot plastic all through the cooling system. You can buy one with a metal impeller that solves this.

Pros: metal impeller solves issue
Cons: plastic impeller explodes
Vehicle: BMW

The cooling system is the major weak point (ask me how I know) - water pump failed before 70k (changed under warranty)

Cons: failed before 70k
Vehicle: BMW
Mileage: 70000 km
