We also have really bad roads. Stock ride height and stock shock absorbers work very good. The factory specification is oil in the front and gas in the rear. We usually use Sachs on our cars.

Pros: work very good

Just replaced all 4 corners on my Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro with the Westcott Designs lift and Fox shocks and the Monroe ride a million times better than that set up with 70k miles on it.

Pros: ride a million times better
Vehicle: Toyota
Mileage: 112654 km

Sachs Shock absorbers

I had the Seat Toledo, a rebadged Skoda Rapid basically. I changed the OEM shocks to aftermarket. The owner of the shop told me that VAG group uses Sachs, so i fitted Sachs. I hated it. The ride became a lot firmer, uncomfortable and annoying. However handing improved and the car felt more planted on the road. Asked the guy about it and told me that aftermarket shocks are generally firmer than OEM even if they come from the same company. Depends on what you prioritise. Comfort or handling.

Pros: handling improved, car felt planted
Cons: firmer ride, uncomfortable, annoying
Vehicle: Seat Toledo

My experience with Monroe shocks over the last 42 years of working on cars. Monroe might have a lifetime warranty like the KYB has, accept even though the replacement is free, you still have the hassle of replacing the Monroe shocks every 2 to 3 years.

Cons: hassle of replacing every 2-3 years

In my experience ever since Tenneco bought Monroe they have been trash. Back when I worked for Subaru the OE and KYB replacements regularly made it 100K, Monroe’s would give up in 40-50k.

Cons: give up quickly
Vehicle: Subaru
Mileage: 45000 km
