Shock absorbers KONI or Sachs

Sachs shocks with Eibach pro-kit springs all round - if your E39 is a petrol straight 6, you need Sachs 556834 front and Sachs 170857 rears with the relevant Eibach pro-kit springs for your engine

I have a Lexus and just paid 350$ just for the Sachs shocks and replacement items, and still have to do the work myself.

I changed everything in my suspension, including new shocks and front springs. Compared to what it was it was a huge improvement. I used Sachs shocks (m sport).

Some one already said it but I recently did koni yellows and HR OE sport springs for mine. On the koni "stock ride hight" setting it sits nice and is a very comfortable ride since the HR springs lower it to a classy level without bottoming out ever.

I did koni orange shocks with eibach pro springs - been dailying it for 5 or so years. It sits about 1in lower than stock.

I went with Koni Super active as an "upgrade" from oem and I'm very happy with those.

I have mildly upgraded shocks (koni active) but otherwise stock and the ride quality is pretty good

At an absolute minimum, Sachs shocks are worth the money, they're perhaps the one thing that has the biggest impact on ride quality. Being a more complex part than control arms and such, a cheap brand isn't going to have anywhere near the same ride quality.

I've had a number of BMWs and VWs with Sachs shocks leak after 40-50k miles. It's not like they totally fail and collapse, they just start having much slower rebound and faster compression.
