BERU Ignition coil

The stock ignition coil on our Mk3 Jetta -- which we've had since it was new in 1996 -- just went out about two years ago. Typical crack causing the engine to die when going through puddles. I considered replacing it was an inexpensive Meyle coil. Decided against it, because while Meyle is a German company, their ignition coil is made in China, and I'd heard some bad things. Figuring the OEM VW coil really is over-priced, I finally decided on a Beru coil. It is made in Germany, and so far no problems.

Pros: made in Germany, no problems
Cons: OEM VW coil over-priced

So far I've replaced all ignition coils (1 died while I was test driving the car, the other 2 years after in the winter, of course). I decided to replace them all with non-faulty Audi parts instead of doing it every year.

Pros: easy and pretty cheap

I am currently using the cheaper version because I just never put in the 'thought-to-be-bad' pack back in [btw, it was an injector so both packs were perfectly fine]. With that in mind, I cannot say there was any quality increase because it was never my CP to begin with so it was still misfiring even with the $350 BERU. But, what they did both do is act exactly the same when I put them both in. I have not had any problems thus far with the cheaper one, and it feels about the exact same quality as the beru brand.

Pros: same quality as Beru

BERU Ignition coil

This is a great thread! I just had one go out on me and I've only had the car for 6 days. Replaced it with a friend and 20 miles later another just went, ha.

Pros: great information on site
Cons: another went out

OEM Audi Ignition coil

Coils I've tested as follows:MSD, Blaster ss/Accel electronic super coil/Accel canister OE replacement/Audi 5KTurbo OE \"E\" core epoxy coil/Ford OE EEC-IV(TFI) E core coil. Results..OEM VW canister oil coil=unable to increase plug gap/difficult starting *sometimes, rough idle MSD Blaster coil=seemingly quicker starts, smoother idle, able to increase plug gap, coil runs hot Accel electronic(square super coil)=pure junk, worked as well as the MSD for starting, however upper revs missed with gap opened, and coil failed within 1 year Accel canister coil(OE replacement)=no noticeable difference from VW OEM coil Ford TFI/EEC-IV \"E\" core coil=plug gap opened larger than MSD, no missing, coil runs at normal temp, quick starts, smooth idle(best of tests of all coils)however;these are known to fry occasionally, must keep a spare. Audi 5KTurbo OE \"E\"core coil=plug gap limited to 0.034\" from 0.028\", easily handles up to redline without missing, runs cooler than other coils, good starting all weather and smooth idle. I currently use the Audi OEM 5K Turbo \"E\" core epoxy/plastic coil and combined with MSD 9mm(50ohms/per foot) custom made wires and the re-wiring of the coil(+)terminal with a Bosch 40Amp relay with 8gauge(Monster Cable) power wire with gold plated terminals........the reason for re-wiring was I noticed around a 1volt drop between the battery and the coil(+)terminal, after adding relay/power wire(10gauge would be fine as well)the voltage is exactly battery voltage...after re-wiring the coil I was unable to ever get any missing in the higher RPM's. And a slight increase in power*seemed* to be felt, but no dyno proof....gas mileage did increase about 4 miles/gallon!!(original mileage was probably poor from crummy OEM wiring)

Pros: smoother idle, increased gas mileage
Cons: coil runs hot, known to fry

BERU Ignition coil

Has anyone ever experienced an odd electrical type humming sound eminating from the front of the dash after putting in a new ignition coil??? I put in a Beru Coil and I could swear I now hear a faint hum that wasn't there prior to installing the new one. It kind of sounds like the radio with the sound way low when it picks up engine frequencies (but I know it's not that). It definitely sounds electrical and not mechanical and I've noticed the hum increases in frequency when I increase the rpm's. Do coils even make any noise??? Thanks.

Pros: faint hum increases with rpm
Cons: odd electrical humming sound
