I once used the 20k mile oil, but changed it at 12k; my engine seemed to run nore smoothly, after that. I swore off longer oil change intervals and went back to regular Mobil 1.

Pros: engine ran more smoothly
Mileage: 12000 km

Yes, you can certainly use 506.01 in your TDI and it's used in many TDIs around the world. However, based upon some of the UOAs offered up, I'd suggest moving to 507.00. The 506.01 has shown relatively high wear metals.

Cons: high wear metals
