I have this exact engine and installed a diesel thermostat. Previously, with the standard thermostat, the plastic timing chain guides would start to disintegrate after three years, but now I have no problem with that. The engine temperature is around 96°C.

Pros: no guide disintegration
Cons: guides disintegrated (standard)

Wahler Thermostat

I got a Wahler thermostat once who was the OEM maker for MB, the only difference between the Wahler and the old MB one was that there was a spot where the MB logo was, on the Wahler one that logo was gone, looks like it was there, but someone with an angle grinder scratched out the MB logo so it probably came off the same line that made the MB part.

Pros: OEM quality, identical to original

I have had a car not bleed properly/ run hot (but not overheat) only when using the wrong thermostat. Replacing it with Wahler fixed the issue.

Pros: fixed bleeding issue

I just put a new Waller in every 8 to 10 years when it comes time to redo the cooling system. Never had a leaking or stuck thermostat but we do live in Southern California, so I think things tend to last longer Here

Pros: no leaking, no sticking, long lasting

I’ve replaced it twice and it starts leaking from there in about 2000 miles or so. I’m willing to bet that thermostat is a Wahler brand. They are known to leak like this.

Cons: leaks after 2000 miles
Vehicle: BMW
Mileage: 3218 km
