I go back and forth between white jug rotella in the summer and t6 in the winter. It's cheap, and I've never had any issues.
Owner reviews for engine oil
Currently running mobil 1 MXT4 in my 2002 vstrom 1000. Holy fuck is it overpriced, but it's cheap insurance. Zero oil consumption despite cruising the highways at 140-150 Kph, @6000rpm.
My local AZ sells Mobil 1 10W-40 Racing 4T, Castrol 10W-40 and 20W-50 synthetic bike oil, and the best bargain of the bunch is Shell Rotella 5W-40 Synthetic T6, which is [rated JASO-MA and MA2](http://s7d9.scene7.com/is/content/GenuinePartsCompany/1843126pdf) (although claimed to meet the spec by Shell, it's apparently not officially certified by JASO).
It might be due to a difference in oil viscosity. With usage the Motul oil has sheared down to 30 weight which makes the engine run more freely and cooler as compared to fresh Castrol which has not accumulated enough hours to lose viscosity. It's been well documented that a viscosity decrease lowers oil temperature.
Valvoline VR1 non synthetic. It is one of the ZDDP oils. Reasonably priced and the Z seems to like it.
Shell Rotella T. The normal type NOT the synthetic. It's a diesel oil you can use with gasoline engines. It's got all the good stuff you need.
I switched to Kendall GT-1 20w-50 high performance and I highly suggest it. You can get 12 quarts shipped to your door from Amazon at a good price.
For example- my turbo used to rattle just for a second upon startup, I always thought this was just because the oil drained out and the pressure needed a sec to catch up when starting - but with the Amsoil its whisper quiet - almost like it creates a film and stays there ready for the next start. There's a few other minor good things about this oil that I've noticed - that's just one of them. Really highly impressed with Amsoil.
No oil consumption within a 10k kms interval. So far so good Driven hard for my first 5000 Km's then dumped the factory oil. Been using Mobil 1 0w40 as I have in my past two GTI's. Drove it hard and haven't let off since.
Amsoil dominator 15w50 Cold (15c ambient) start up pressure = ~70psi Warm (200f) idle pressure = ~35psi Max hot (~270f) pressure @ 5th gear WOT = ~87psi and it holds steady Cruising on the highway (220f @ ~3k RPM) I see ~65-70psi Everything is well within factory spec with added protection, less consumption, proper flow, and better high heat retention. I'm gonna stick with Amsoil for a while.
