K&N Air filter

I have and like the K&N filter that drops in the factory housing, i like that you can just clean it and put it back in. You won’t notice any difference power or fuel milage wise.

Pros: easy to clean
Cons: no power/mileage difference

I had a 2014 Ford fusion with a 2.5l engine and put one in and I could definitely notice a difference. Plus it is a lifetime filter so you'd never have to replace it again. Only clean and refill with oil.

Pros: noticeable difference, lifetime filter
Vehicle: Ford Fusion

K&N Air filter

You could look at a K&N drop in filter. They flow better and can give a little performance boost.

Pros: flow better, performance boost

The OE filters are fantastic at efficiency in filtration over service life as they will filter smaller particles consistently. But they will clog rapidly and reduce overall flow to the point of producing a compromise in fueling. This shows up in the combustion efficiency and nitration numbers of a comprehensive oil analysis. I tend to stay away from the high flow "performance" filters and just change my OEs more often.

Pros: fantastic filtration efficiency, filters smaller particles
Cons: clogs rapidly, reduces overall flow
Mileage: 24140 km

There was a "performance" K&N filter and lots of detritus in the bottom of the air box I scrubbed down the box, and it is looking fresh. Except for the super greasy valve covers and rest of the engine bay. Oh, and I'm getting rid of the K&N filter--never been a fan.

Pros: scrubbed down box, looking fresh
Cons: never been a fan
Vehicle: Audi A4

All the MAF stuff aside, I've never been a fan. I've seen people with diesel trucks running that have collapsed and sucked into the intake tube. Granted our trucks don't have turbos, but that alone makes me question their quality. Plus I fear a more "open" filter would allow more particles. I'll keep my stock pleated filter.

Cons: poor quality, allows more particles
