Some do work, they need a high PEA content to be effective though. I use Redline SL-1 for my B58.

Redline SI-1 is highly regarded for its high PEA content for carbon cleaning.
Redline 85+ has worked well for me in past on my ALH, they also have diesel fuel catalyst
As far as fuel additives, they're best used to clean injectors and keep them clean. The best for this IMO and the one I use is Redline SI-1, best ingredients the details of which I don't recall of the top of my head, did the research long ago.
If you wanted to try an additive I would recommend Red Line. I had a BMW with tank level issues and it corrected it
