OEM Volvo Alternator
Eddie-Plum
  • Warning light:
  • Noise:
Rating 4.0

The V8s are good. I've had 2 pulleys/bearings go bad. The second failed completely, dropping the aux belt and damaging the timing cover. If you hear any weird noises from the engine bay, check your pulleys.

They're also not as bad on fuel as you'd expect. I've regularly seen 25mpg+ on a good run.

ABS modules and siren modules always fail, but are relatively cheap & easy to replace. Alternators also seem to be a weak point and are _really_ awkward to get to.

Pros: good fuel economy
Cons: alternators awkward to get

OEM Volvo Brake pads

XC90 T8, total 135k km on the clock and have done 85k km ourselves:

- previous owner did the brake pads at about 40k km

- we have now done front and rear brake pads recently (so after about 90k km use), both front and rear still had about 3mm to go.

Pros: 3mm left after 90k km
Vehicle: Volvo XC90
Mileage: 135000 km

MICHELIN Tires
Eddie-Plum
  • Grip:
  • Noise:
Rating 2.5

my experience is that summer tyres provide _significantly_ more grip in the wet than CC2s. If you get ice and snow, CC2s are great, but they're not very good in the wet.

They're also not particularly quiet. I put them on my XC90 and found them to be very droney at anything over 50mph.

Pros: great in ice and snow
Cons: poor wet grip, not quiet, droney at speed

OEM Volvo Piston rings

the piston thing oil eating is happening - I don’t remember getting anything from them telling me about the issue. And for more than a year.. maybe 2… been bringing it in for oil when the light goes on between services.

Cons: excessive oil consumption, piston issue
