OEM Volkswagen Water pump

60k on my mk7r, hasn't needed anything but maintenance. Water pumps were a known issue on early mk7 but from my understanding have been resolved in new part revisions with upgraded metal internals.

Pros: upgraded metal internals
Cons: known issue on early mk7
Mileage: 60000 km

I have a 2015 R and my water pump failed in January, about 2 months before my warranty expired. It was covered by the dealer under the warranty so not sure what the cost was. Pump and thermostat were both replaced.

Pros: covered under warranty

Rating 3.0

A typical replacement is Part # 5N0965561A that runs $530 from VAG Australia (Pierburg or Buehler) with another $126 labour and $132 for G13 coolant. Alternatively, get a $70 cheapie like the BAPMIC on eBay (risky, error code may not clear, or part may fail prematurely).

Pros: cheaper alternative available
Cons: risky, may fail prematurely
Part number: 5N0965561A

OEM Volkswagen Water pump

i noticed that my coolant was a tiny bit low in early October. Well, when I took it in last Tuesday, November 24th, turns out that I needed a new water pump, and because there was a 5 year, 60,000 mile warranty, and 5 years had just passed, i had to pay ~$700 to have it fixed. so far so good after that, but I am going to write VWOA about it, because I was literally only about two weeks out of the 5 year warranty expiration.

Pros: fixed, working well
Cons: coolant low, expensive repair
Mileage: 78213 km

OEM Volkswagen Water pump

My mk6 went through THREE water pumps. All covered under warranty because a class action lawsuit forced VW to extend the coverage period several years, but still a pain in the ass. What's frustrating is that VW kept replacing them with the same faulty pump instead of addressing the problem and redesigning it.

Cons: frequent failures, faulty design, pain to replace

OEM Volkswagen Water pump

I have a MK6 and a MK7 and they both suffer the same crappy design. Making a water pump primarily out of plastic is just a bad idea. My MK6 is on at least it's third water pump at a little over 100k miles.

Cons: crappy design, plastic parts, poor reliability
Mileage: 160000 km
