So first thing I ordered was a set of Koni sport shocks and struts. These were on sale for BF at $612 at Koni online store. When I drove the car home after it was unloaded I was glad I already had the shocks and struts as the steering was super light and twitchy, car did not know where it was going. After install the car was transformed, the Konis tightened up the steering and feel, car stays flat in the curves and feels more like a Porsche.
Best Shock absorbers for Volkswagen Beetle
B6 or similar (forget the Koni equal) would be a huge step forward.
That is one reason we put disc brakes all around and lowered the CG of the main mass and installed KYB gas shocks, etc.
I've always like the GR2 for a regular street car. Sure, Bilsteins are objectively better, but there's nothing wrong with Excel-Gs, nee GR2.
The beetle ones have done me right for probably 30k miles. My setup is 3.5 in drop plates on 13"s with no leafs removed, it can still haul 800lbs with 130psi in the rear no problem.
30+ year old Bilsteins...still damp the rebound nicely too.
