Windshield Pilkington or OEM Volkswagen
I disagree. I live in Alberta where they pile the stones onto the roadways for 6 months of the year(For traction on ice/snow) and I've never had a tougher windshield. Thing has been nailed dozens of times over the past year and have yet to leave a chip/crack. And for the record I've never had a windsheild last longer than 2 months here. (The passat is my 5th vehicle in Alberta) I broke my subaru Windshield the day I bought it! Its ridiculous.....Glass insurance for a year costs more then the windshield
I have a Passat with Pilkington, which also has the sound deadener, and I have no distortions
A local one near here put in a brand new Pilkington windshield for $160 installed.
Ask for PPG or Pilkington replacement glass. OEM glass from VW/Audi is $$$ (and has to be ordered), and both PPG & Pilkington are OEM glass manufacturers. Cheaper alternatives are not any less "safe", but don't always fit as well, which can lead to stress cracks.
Conversion from glue-in to flex gasket windshield is a common modification. I recently converted my 84 Rabbit to a flex gasket/windshield and am very pleased with it. You don't need the "gator" clips and I don't like them. The glass for the flex rubber gasket has a slightly different dimension than the glue-in glass. Simply, order a windshield for a 1985 cabriolet from your glass store. My Pilkington brand with an upper tint band was about 130$ uninstalled.
The guy came out and did a fine job installing the new windshield - Pilkington glass.
Make sure you get BLUE tinted glass, or it wont match...had to do it to my GLI the only place I could find it was the dealership, then had someone else install it right there. Price wasnt that bad about 300...
You sure you really want a genuine VW windshield?? In my opinion the damn things are too weak and chip too easily! I think something is wrong with their glass manufacturing over there.
I have difficulty seeing through my windsheild when heavy rain is hitting the car while driving. The wipers do no not clear the water fast enough and there seems to be some sort of film that clouds up the glass.
VW Glass is crap. If you look real close at your windshield at the lower passenger side, I guarantee that you will find distortion in the glass. It is also softer than other manufactures glass. I have several small and good size pits on my windshield.
