Sounds like your water pump is shot. The impeller is spinning on the shaft and not pushing the water. I just had a customer who had this problem. The crazy thing is, I just replaced the pump about 2 years/30K ago with a GMB pump. He had the exact same symptoms as you: car gets hot, but does not overheat, no water through the return line, and fan takes a long time before it turns on.
i just got my waterpump replaced at 14,000 miles and it got rid of that annoying sound.
my water pump went at 80K (KM)'s (got it towed to georgetown VW) and when i got my OEM replacement it was metal... compared to the plastic one they took out... Saw it touched it... (they showed me the old plastic one) i thought it was weird and they said in 2002 and after they have metal water pumps... before that it was "plastic"? anyways its in and i have a metal one... and i got it from a VW dealer... OEM part...
I have this problem. I have been hearing the noise on and off for about 6 months. It only lasts for a few seconds and usually happens at lights or when idling before I turn it off. It could never be replicated, I never saw a loss in power or performance so I haven't had a clue what to do.
If your water pump is shot or going you will notice that your car is going to run hotter than ever. If you continuously see that you are overheating this could be the result of a bad water pump. I had to replace my water pump @ 25K when the original pump was removed the plastic impeller inside came out in about 4 pieces. It was completly fubar..
Just got a call from the dealer. Water pump is leaking coolant.
My 2012 GTI, with only 10.000 miles started leaking coolant, turns out the water pump is bad, it is now sitting at the dealer waiting for the part.
Not Always True I replaced mine after 100k w/ an OEM water pump (plastic). Here I am 2 years later w/ another broken water pump. Now, I'm looking into metal & electric water pump. VW makes a piss poor plastic water pump. I'm very frustrated about having to address this issue again, so soon at $800-$850
They also mentioned that the waterpump is leaking really bad and is shot and needs to be replaced.
I bought my 2001 Jetta with 80k on it. It came with a broken water pump (plastic) plus 6 belt valves and a quarter of the teeth missing from the timing belt. The pump was in about 30 pieces and the damage to the valves was do to the water pump.
