My 2017 GTI SE also had a slight coolant smell but no visible leaks on the garage floor. When I brought it in for the 40K mile DSG transmission fluid service a couple of months ago, my dealer detected the leak from a defective water pump and replaced it under warranty.
I've had my mk6 for 5 years and driven it 50,000 miles (total 130,000) on the same water pump.
60k on my mk7r, hasn't needed anything but maintenance. Water pumps were a known issue on early mk7 but from my understanding have been resolved in new part revisions with upgraded metal internals.
After wrapping up and turning it back on the CEL/MIL light comes on for Aux water pump and they replaced that too the next day.
My 2019 Tiguan SE 4motion with about 20,000 miles has been telling me to add coolant every few weeks. Today I dropped the car off at my local VW dealership stating I had a possible coolant leak. Just got a call from the service advisor saying hey will need to keep the car overnight bc they have to replace the waterpump!
IDK - I was at 160K or so miles when I sold my '11 Tiguan. Sure, it ate a water pump, had the first gen timing chain tensioner replaced, needed cv axles, had a stuck fuel injector, lost an intake manifold, blew a turbo diaphragm, destroyed its engine mount bushings, struts and shocks went bad, needed seat covers replaced because they cracked and split and needed new tires every 25K or so...
The tech noticed the water pump was leaking slightly. All got repaired under VW warranty which was lucky as it was around £1800 otherwise I think. Anyway, the weird thing is the car always lost coolant from new - it would drop to the min level, but they couldn't find a fault when I mentioned it until they physically found the water pump leaking after 4 years and 40k miles. I think the pump is plastic which may not be ideal.
VW TSI water pump: garbage.
That is indeed a common failure item on the 2 liter turbo engine. One of my VWs went out @ 70k miles.
I had a coolant leak in august. They replaced my water pump under warranty. Brought my car in last week and guess what another freaking leak. They tried to charge me this time but are now fixing it under parts warranty.
