Tires Toyo or Nokia

Nokia Tires

Nokian Hakka R3s is my preference. They’re pretty sporty, so the car drive much like it does on the summer tires instead of the splashy feeling I’ve had from other snows.

Pros: pretty sporty
Cons: splashy feeling

Agreed, the Nokian hakkapalitas are exceptional winter tires. But, the Michelin X-ICE snow tires, I have heard good things (from friends, first hand).

Pros: exceptional winter tires

I recommend Continental winter contact, General altimax arctic 12 or Toyo observe gsi-6. Top 3 winter tires in my opinion for reliability, tread wear, noise and cost.

Pros: reliability, tread wear, noise

Yes, get 16" Tig OEM steelies and hub covers, and have your VW dealer put on Nokian Hakkapellitas or Rotivas, that you can order on Tire Rack to ship free to the dealer or your local shop. Dont wait too long as these are the best winters you can buy

Pros: best winters you can buy

Nokian WR G4's are low rolling resistance, and does well in the snow/packed snow/ice until the snowflake disappears, and doesn't affect gas mpg.

Pros: low rolling resistance
Cons: snowflake disappears

I have been running snows for over 30 years and the only ones I have ever had that are the quietest, are the Nokian Rotiiva AT. Not perfect, but leaps and bounds better than everything else I have run.

Pros: leaps and bounds better
Cons: not perfect

Personally, I think a Hakka 1 or Hakka 2 is too agressive a tire for an AWD NJ daily driver unless your commute is only a couple of miles. They'll corner like you have four gum-erasers mounted and at least double your road noise.

Cons: agressive tire, road noise

I hated them on the base Turbo hatchback I had previously. Grip was awful in the rain once temperatures dropped.

Cons: awful grip in rain
