Tires MICHELIN or GENERAL TIRE

MICHELIN Tires

This is why modern winter tires like the Michelin X-Ice that have rather "docile" tread patterns still do amazingly well on ice and snow, and that is a compound that is still useful in the cold.

Pros: amazingly well on ice

I once had about 4mm (barely anything) of tread left on some Michelin xice. I switched to a set of brand new all seasons... The traction on snow and ice that I had with the 4mm was so much greater than AS tires.

Pros: greater traction on snow

GENERAL TIRE Tires

I ordered some General Grabber Arctic XL. They are studdable tires, so may not fit your needs. Mainly got them because I used to run General Altimax Arctic on my sportwagon and they've been great. If they perform similar to the Altimax they are pretty good on the pavement, and great in all bad weather conditions and last a long time.

Pros: good in bad weather

GENERAL TIRE Tires

Can go wrong with Nokians, in my opinion. I've had several sets on Saabs, my JSW, Touareg, and currently run studded Hakkepellitas on the wife's fwd GSW 5 speed. I ran General artic studdless on my GSW 4 motion 6 speed last winter and was pleased with the performance of those as well.

Pros: pleased with performance

For all seasons, get Michelin pilot a/s 3+. Way better than the Conti extremecontacts I had before. Probably not quite as good in the snow but who cares. So smooth, relatively quiet, and great grip for an all season.

Pros: smooth, relatively quiet
Cons: not great in snow

It is an EXTREMELY common problem on Mk4's to show cupping on inside of rear tires even with everything at spec. After you rotate them, the \"good front\" tires on rear will then begin cupping also, and the noise problem will increase as they wear more... the rears will \"sing\" with the cupped fronts (formerly on rear) and you can get some pretty loud droning at low speeds, only becoming less noticable at high speeds.

Cons: cupping on inside, noise problem
