This is what a 225/40/18 on a 18x10 falken 912 looks like (my car) The 512's kind of sink in more at the sidewall area as opposed to the 912's just kind of gently curving up. I would personally ruin 452's over 912's any day... I've run all three..
The cheapest tires I trust are Kumho.
I just bought some Falken Sincera SN211's for my 03 VUE for $450 installed. 80K Warranty. Pretty good if you don't need performance tires.
The ride is very soft/smooth and quiet. Far superior in handling (obviously) and noise than the factory Michelin's were.
I have a nice set of Falken Zeix 512 on my Fox and they grip nicely in all seasons, plus pretty cheap. I give thumbs up to the Falkens
Had numerous sets of 452s and 512s... highly recommended for a lower priced tire.
x2 for Falkens, i've had a set of 512's and 912's, great tire, even better price
I have Kumho ASX's on the GTI. Treadlife has been great. I currently have about 43k miles on the set and if the retards aligned my wheels correctly when I had them put on, I would be able to get another 15-20k out of them I'm sure. However, they're starting to develop some pretty bad cupping because of said poor alignment. Not the tire's fault, though. The noise is a little much. I notice it, but it doesn't bother me.
Have you considered a 205-40-17 Falken 512? It's a crappy tire, but it stretches well.
khumo? forget about em, wet traction is dangerously low. i prefer Bridgestone, the potenza line. RE-01 R for summer compound. 960 as Pole Position for all weather compound. keep in mind that my perspective is from a performance standpoint, i dont give a crap about how many miles i get out of a tire so long as i enjoy it while i have it.
