Tires DUNLOP or SUMITOMO
The Sumitomo HTRs are pretty good. Either the A/S P02 or the Z III. The Z IIIs are a bit sportier, and the P02s are solid all seasons with a 500 treadwear rating and a W speed rating. They also grip impressively well for a set of fairly cheap all seasons.
Dunlop SportMaxx RT. Best bang for buck IMO.
I installed Dunlop sport max RT summer tires and they work great and were priced good, I've had them on all winter too and I've driven them in 20-30° weather and they still performed very good, although I'm happy overall with the tire, they're almost worn out.
I wish there were more options but the OEM Dunlops are wearing well -- only about halfway worn at 25k miles. They are decent, quiet and have good grip (wet braking is very good) so I might just buy another set of them when the time comes.
I have the dunlops on my S4, and I'm quite happy with them. They' have about 10k miles on them, and are wearing better than I expected. For the price, you won't be disappointed.
I have ~90,000 miles of winter driving under my belt, and will say that these Winter Sport 4D tires are probably the best that I've ever used.
I have Sumitoma HTR ZIII's on my car and they work great for a street tire. I am surprised how long the rear tires are lasting.
The Dunlop's really aren't a bad tire (Having done tire evaluation for SCCA to decide the spec tires for a few classes i've done quite a bit of performance tire comparison), in the dry I was more than satisfied with the grip of the Dunlop's, it is more than sufficient to suit the \"sportiness\" of the GLI.
I got my WRX in March, near the end of the winter season. It snowed heavily one day, and I got stuck trying to go up my driveway because I only had the stock Dunlops. AWD was no replacement for winter tires.
Dunlop are utter garbage (loud terrible tread life)
