I just put a set of Continental extremecontact dws06 plus on my car and they are an absolute dream in the ice and snow for an all season
Love mine, they’re great
Just moved from Nokian all weather, which are really good, to studded Contis on a small fwd vehicle. Pretty unreal difference. Have Bridgestone all weather on an awd vehicle, which are also good, but the studded Contis beat the crap out of them.
I had the R2s on my 2021 Domane SL7. Had a rear sidewall blowout after a few hundred miles without hitting anything. Trek warrantied the tire and I used the credit to upgrade to the GP5K tubeless. Have to say they are awesome in every way and I like the tubeless ride, smooth, fast, grippy.
Changing between the two is like riding a totally different bike - very responsive with the conti tyres but can give a lot of vibration on rough surfaces and much more dampened with the Bontragers but confidence inspiring when riding over damp leaves etc.
I'd go with the Conti GP 5000.
I've ridden the R3s in a 28c tubeless on my Domane. The R3s were solid but I really liked the way the GP5ks rolled when I had them (32c with tubes).
I had the R3’s and couldn’t tell a difference from those and the R2’s that came on the SL6. Then I switched to the Continental GP5000’s and it’s just a night and day tire. I’ll never go back.
I have an emonda and I’m running the contis, really really like them, it may be my imagination, but the tubeless makes a nice difference to road vibration.
Agree on running them at higher pressure to help with squishy feeling. All around performance in inclement weather was pretty good. Mine got noisy earlier than I would have hoped for primarily long distance highway use even with proper alignment, balance and rotation.
I have never been a fan of Conti tires, especially anything with "ContiSport" in its name. They come OE on many German marques, and I can't for the life of me figure out WHY other than some smoking back room deal hammered out over loads of pharmaceuticals in the wee hours of the morning. My MK6 felt like a cement truck with its OE Contis. They would flat spot in what seemed like 120 seconds, noisy as all get out and lasted 1/3 of the claimed milage. Ive permanently deformed Contis on my old 05 E55 by just hitting a small chuck hole or bump. This is anecdotal evidence at best, but my money is on the tires being deformed, belt shift or what ever the excuse of the day is.
