I have an 06. Had the same issue. Bought a cheap thermostat which turned out to be no good but acted the same as the old thermostat. Then, I changed EVERYTHING else in the coolant system, lol. Switched to Gates, problem solved.

Pros: solved overheating issue
Vehicle: Dodge RAM

To complement this, the Gates thermostat I bought for a Mercedes M272 engine was identical to the Mercedes A2722000115, except that the Mercedes logo cast into the housing had been (mostly) ground down.

Pros: identical to Mercedes part
Cons: logo mostly ground down
Vehicle: Mercedes
Part number: A2722000115

Not the water pump but I just had my thermostat replaced under the extended warranty. I was slowly losing coolant with no discernable leak.

Pros: fully covered, extended warranty
Cons: slowly losing coolant

I just got this done and Audi quoted me $2500 for just the thermostat. Mine was covered by the extended warranty Audi has on all water pumps leaks.

Pros: covered by warranty
Cons: expensive repair
Vehicle: Audi A3

Man, you just get the thermostat itself. Nothing more. Something like that was for 2008 Rabbit (2.5 I-5). Mine car had exactly same symptoms. It would reach 70 C and maybe at some point 80, but had tendency to stay cool (below 80) when driving. I know thermostat opens at 80 C, so anything below 80 is not quite right.

Pros: maintains 85 or more
Cons: tendency to stay cool
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Part number: 34800

the 80c has been running flawless. Only difference is that my coolant stays at 83-94c. It used to get as high as 100 sometimes. Also the 80c part was recommended oe part #

Pros: running flawless, lower coolant temperature
Vehicle: Audi TT

My Q5 with 75,000 miles on it developed a leak in the water pump area. Initially Audi denied there was a leak, so I took pictures and showed it to them. Then they diagnosed it with thermostat leak.

Pros: warranty on that part
Cons: leak in water pump
Vehicle: Audi Q5
Mileage: 75000 km

The current plastic thermostat looks a little more beefy, but is still shatty plastic. They're commonly failing at 30-55k miles in the stuck closed position, instant overheat.

Pros: more beefy look
Cons: shatty plastic, instant overheat
Vehicle: Audi A6
Mileage: 55000 km
