Oil filter Mahle or K&N

K&N Oil filter

I've been running Castrol 5w40 in my cars for years. Started in my '99 Beetle 2.0 and now my 1.8T GTI. I use the K&N filter but I get the one for the Passat since its larger.

Pros: larger filter, good performance

Mahle Oil filter

I have several VW/Audi cars and I use Mahle oil filters most of the time. I've heard some horror stories about other aftermarket filters causing some problems, particularly on the water cooled Vanagons (I have one). Mahle and Mann seem like the best option.

Pros: best option, avoids problems
Vehicle: Volkswagen

K&N Oil filter

K&N filters are beefier, my old VRs filters used to come out looking like that. The only filter that would withstand the vr and keep its shape was the k & n

Pros: beefier, keeps its shape

K&N Oil filter

Rating 1.0

The filter I was running was a K&N. I removed the old filter and it had totally collapsed. The oil light would come on at every stop in the first 10-15 minutes of driving. Especially in cold weather. After changing the old K&N filter that was in horrible condition, I have had no issues whatsoever.

Cons: filter totally collapsed, caused oil light
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 16000 km

K&N Oil filter

Most cars in my house get cheap bulk ordered filters off RockAuto. Except the STI, that one has been getting K&N and soon switching to Wix. I’d never allow the oem trash cardboard filter near my car.

Pros: switching to Wix
Cons: oem trash cardboard filter
Vehicle: Subaru
