Replaced: oil filter (fram), oil 0-40w Outcome: Compression was restored and car started, loud valve train noise gone.
I have several VW/Audi cars and I use Mahle oil filters most of the time. I've heard some horror stories about other aftermarket filters causing some problems, particularly on the water cooled Vanagons (I have one). Mahle and Mann seem like the best option.
My '94 Celica with 256k miles never knew it to be true. Good ol' Fram orange is pretty much all I've ever used, though I did switch to the "high mileage" ones somewhere around 225k. That's what's on there right now.

Fram… even used the orange can of death on my old Toyotas without issues.
Don't use Fram oil filters. Motorcraft/Purolator, wix, bosch, mann, etc... are good.
Also stay the hell away from Fram and K&N oil filters. They're crap. Go for Wix or Bosch.
On a side note, I literally had to destroy the Fram Filter to get it off the truck. I can now say never again.
i have a fram oil filter and it just started doing this and its been about 1.5k miles since i last changed my oil
fram or almost as junk as fram filter they have been known to cause all sorts of oil pressure issues.
