For quality and availability, it's hard to beat M1 0W-40.
I bought 5 qrts Mobile 1 Edge synthetic 0W20 on sale with a filter from Advanced Auto for $40, took the oil and filter to the Honda Dealer, and they changed my oil for $15 labor plus tax and fees, total $18. So this brought total cost to $58 for synthetic oil change.
the only oil you'll find at Walmart that's approved is mobil 1 ow40.
I will also use a zero weight synthetic like mobil one.
I am getting great results with the Ravenol VMO 5w40 in my 08 2.0 TSI, almost no burn off in 5K change and area below oil fill in valve cover is spotless. Used to have a dark color oil film at change interval but after 4 changes with the Ravenol it is clean oil film now at change.
I just switched to Mobil 1 for the last interval and the engine ran much better on it.
I used 5w40 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic in my 08 Passat. Had such great results, I carried it over to my 12 R Line.
In my VW's I do 5K oil/filter change just to be safe and always use VW spec oil. I do not have analysis done on my used oil, it may go farther but $50 for Ravenol VMO 5w40 and OEM filter is a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild.
I am using the Ravenol for last 3 changes, oil consumption at 5K change intervals is less than 1/2 quart (about 1/4 qt on last change) and hoping this may lead to less carbon build up.
I did my 1.8T AWP valve cover gasket two weeks ago and I can highly recommend Mobil1 0/40. Used it since 3/2002.
