The rotors I used are DBA 4000 series T3, and pads are HAWK HPS 5.0
I did my own brakes, sorta with and without the special tool. My conclusion is that the tool is not strictly needed.
Once your stock brake pads are toast as well I’d upgrade them to something like Hawk’s HPS 5 pads.
hawk HPS 5.0 are great pads for daily and ‘spirited’ driving
I've enjoyed my Hawk HPS 5.0 pads quite a bit, though I have the PP brakes. Handled a track day very well with no fade (I'm no pro so I'm sure they can fade if pushed hard enough).
I just traded in my 2019 Jetta with 65000 miles, never changed the brakes, but looked at them at 60000. It looks like they were at thick as new, insane. Would stop on a dime.
That said, I have a '22 SE that has 53,000 miles. The rear brake pads failed at 23,000 miles.
I run Hawk HP Plus on DBA rotors, but I also sound like a school bus stopping. Doesn\u2019t bother me, but they\u2019re on the louder slide.
Hawk HPS5 is ceramic and not good. The Akebonos also blow.
If you have white, the break dust will color your car.
