Brake pads Akebono or OEM Toyota

Akebono Brake pads

Akebono ProACT ceramics have been solid for me on multiple cars over the years. They're OEM supplier for a lot of manufacturers so you know they're not gonna be sketchy, and the stopping power is definitely an upgrade from stock without being overkill for daily driving

Pros: stopping power upgrade, not sketchy

Just last year I switched out the original Yokohama tires for Pirelli and this year I switched out the original front brake pads. My mechanic said the rear pads still has life in them so deal with it next time. I thought it would cost a lot, but it was just Toyota parts so price was $120 or so.... and its going to be another 10 years before needing another change assuming similar driving habits.

Pros: Toyota parts, reasonable price
Vehicle: Lexus

Akebono ProACT or Brembo OEM ceramic pads are great for strong, reliable stopping power and low dust on a 2019 Fusion Hybrid; if the rotors are worn, replace or resurface them too.

Pros: strong, reliable stopping power
Cons: rotors may need replacement
Vehicle: Ford Fusion

Akebono Pads and Zimmerman Rotors are a popular combo. I just did them myself a few months ago coming off OEMs and stopping seems better and way less brake dust!

Pros: better stopping, less brake dust

I've been running those pads for a while now, not only do they feel and stop just like OEM unless you're a person that tracks the car, but they also keep your wheels clean longer. The amount of reduced dust is staggering. No other noise, I've never had them squeal, even when needing to be replaced.

Pros: feel like OEM, reduced dust
Cons: none

Akebono Brake pads

Recently did a brake change on my 14 Q50S AWD, pads and rotors (Akebono) for front and rear for regular maintenance. After the change I did the same break in technique I’ve done with all of my vehicles and all was well.

Pros: regular maintenance, all was well

Akebono Brake pads

Having said that - aside from the valve cover gasket - that job requires all gaskets replaced on the air intake side, and I’m not seeing those in the list. Also, for some reason, I had bad luck with Akebono pads on my Honda. Worked well on a Toyota but just about each time my Pilot would develop a shimmy after about 10k kms after pads replacement. I have had a much better luck with Centrix rotors and pads.

Pros: better luck with Centrix rotors/pads
Cons: bad luck with Akebono pads
Vehicle: Honda Pilot
Mileage: 10000 km

I have a 2000 E39 that I’ve owned since new. About five years ago I got tired of the brake dust and decided to try Akebono’s. I regretted it as soon as I drove it for the first time. The BMW brake feel was gone and I had to press on the pedal twice as hard.

Cons: BMW brake feel gone
Vehicle: BMW
