Brake discs R1 Concepts or OEM Volkswagen
Just discussed this last week. I side with my VW dealer on it. They recommend just replacing the rotors, its really not that much more than having them turned, considering you almost guarantee no pulsation, no shimmy or shudder and more even brake wear.
Engine braking is how I got 60k miles out of the original brake rotors and pads on my '07 GTI as well as a steady 30 mpg while barely trying.
i have them on my 1998 Golf GTI What i have used since 3 months: ... R1 concepts brake discs (not a famous brand but really nice discs) And then it's plug and play. Pedal feel is very good and it brakes very good!
Rallye 1.8T you are the man! Thanks for the tip and saving me a lot of time and money. The mk5 312x25mm rotors work on my setup. Only thing I have to do is run one thin washer between the bracket and spindle.
I had the car in at the dealer on Saturday morning. Spent about 3 hours there. The service guy took it and had the front rotors replaced. They agreed there was quite a bit of shake in the steering wheel. All in all, good experience.
If VW won't cover the costs, then don't buy the VW rotors again. Tire Rack sells Centric brand rotors for our vans. These are the same rotors that Powerslot rotors use, just without the slots. They are about $50 each are a much better quality than the stockers. Yeah it's $200, but I would bet these will not warp like the stock rotors.
They are slightly better tho because the rotors are bigger, hence better stopping power but all that has already been discussed up top. I just want alittle quicker braking and nicer looking calipers.
i have been told at the dealer that new thickness is approx 25 mm, and replacement size is 23 mm... VW recommends they be done together, but backyard experts & penny pinchers feel that it isn't necessary...... I would never take a chance for the $200 or so that rotors cost it just isn't worth it. if you can't afford $200 for the most critical safety system on your car, perhaps you should take the bus until you can... Very small diameter diferences cause degradation of brake performance, witness when the pads are half worn how low the fluid goes down....that is compensating for the pad wear and ROTOR wear as well......tires & brakes are all that saves your butt in the day-to-day world of insanity out there, don't be foolish.
It was brought in by another shop that installed rear brake pads and rotors.
You know.... I thought I was immune to the brake issue on the Routan until about 3 hours ago. Was on the freeway and had to brake somewhat hard for traffic. And there it was.... very noticeable shake of warped front rotors. 9300 miles on it. I am super light on my brakes. Almost all of my driving is freeway driving. These rotors are clearly crap.
