Battery OPTIMA or OEM Volkswagen
My car previous to that ('98 Z/28), had an Optima Yellow top. The car sat in garaged for several months with a map light left on, and the battery was dead. It took about 15 minutes of jumping to get interior lights, and another 10-15 minutes to start. After this, I drove that car for another 4 years with the same battery without any other issues.
The OEM tundra batteries only last me 3.5 years at best. I always replace with an Optima battery.
I always buy an Optima battery for all my cars cuz they last a lifetime.
Change it when it can no longer meat a battery test to spec, which has good margin before it starts causing issues, like freaked out ECU or hard starting.
OEM VW Battery lasted 7/8 years, despite me nuking it by foolishly leaving my lights on. Sad day.
When I replace mine I went with the Optima Yellow Top. Seems to be hanging in there 6 years later.
Mine crapped out at 34 months. I bought a new one from VW since they had a 5-year warranty on it and it's still going...
I went through 3 red tops within 2 years because of bad cells.
I got stuck getting an optima for my truck because the one that was in it literally exploded.
10 years ago, in Florida, I bought the red top battery for my F250 diesel. It blew up under the hood and sprayed battery juice on everything. It was only a few months old. Discount Auto replaced it for free under warranty. But I wouldn't buy another red top.
