My 2005 Altima used to eat alternators. The first and second replacement were rebuilds or aftermarket, I don't remember the order. I finally paid for an OEM and that one lasted until I sold the vehicle a few years later. This is one of those parts that is better to stick with OEM replacements.

Pros: OEM lasted longer
Cons: aftermarket failed quickly
Vehicle: Nissan Altima

Duralast Alternator

The only good thing about buying a duralast is it'll be the last alternator that you have to *PAY* for. But it def will *NOT* be the last alternator you install in the truck. Lol

Pros: last alternator you pay
Cons: frequent alternator install

Duralast Alternator

Right on schedule, about 7 months later, that reman also went out and I decided to pay more to get the Duralast Gold which is all new. That one lasted about a year and a half but then the bearings went out on it, but I don't think that issue was the alternator's fault because after I replaced it, I found out the Harmonic Balancer had lost its integrity and was wobbling a little. Again, not sure what caused what (did the bearings put extra pressure on the aging balancer or did the balancer go out and damage the alternator?), but all I can say is that since replacing the harmonic balancer and using the Duralast Gold alternator, I have not had any issues for over 2 years now.

Pros: lasted a year and a half
Cons: bearings went out
Vehicle: Toyota

Wouldn't recommend AutoZone based on my experience. Had a duralast gold fail on me and had to get a replacement one.

Cons: duralast gold fail

Duralast Alternator

Made the mistake of buying the duralast, first one lasted a couple months, and the second one is dying, only charging the battery at highway speeds, just like the first one before it died.

Cons: died after a couple months

November of 2023 I had to replace the alternator. I purchased an aftermarket and had a mechanic friend install it for me. 6 weeks later it started acting up again and left me stranded. The battery tested good, alternator was bad. I returned the alternator and was warranted a second one. Roughly 2 months later, the battery light comes on while I am out of town. I pulled into a local parts store and had it tested. Battery tested fine. Alternator tested bad. The Nissan dealership says it is the alternator. But since I had not used a factory alternator that was the problem. Apparently the aftermarket alternators can not handle the load and are not set up properly.

Pros: aftermarket alternators fail quickly
Cons: cannot handle the load
Vehicle: Nissan Pathfinder
