Sounds like your water pump is shot. The impeller is spinning on the shaft and not pushing the water. I just had a customer who had this problem. The crazy thing is, I just replaced the pump about 2 years/30K ago with a GMB pump. He had the exact same symptoms as you: car gets hot, but does not overheat, no water through the return line, and fan takes a long time before it turns on.

Pros: customer had same symptoms
Cons: pump replaced 2 years ago
Mileage: 30000 km

I ran one on my 1.8t 3076R befor it got broken into and stolen last week. System went. Ice box, above IC core height wise, bottom port on box went to the bosh pump, into intercooler, out of intercooler into heat exchanger in the front, out of exchanger then back to the tank. Logged IC temps and they were rock steady. no problems at all with it.

Pros: IC temps rock steady

The waterpump is a good idea if you're replacing the timing belt, and you don't know how old the waterpump is. Don't buy the Hepu (from germanautoparts/GAP) or Graf waterpump (looks like it may be made by the same company). I just bought a Hepu waterpump from another Vortex member who bought it fro GAP. The casting is crude, the bearing appears to be fine, but the impeller is stamped steel (which I don't like), and the finish work is mediocre, bordering on poor. For less money and free shipping you can get a Meyle waterpump from autohausaz.com.

Pros: free shipping
Cons: mediocre finish work

Rating 3.0

I have this problem. I have been hearing the noise on and off for about 6 months. It only lasts for a few seconds and usually happens at lights or when idling before I turn it off. It could never be replicated, I never saw a loss in power or performance so I haven't had a clue what to do.

Pros: noise on and off
Cons: hard to replicate
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 9500 km

Not Always True I replaced mine after 100k w/ an OEM water pump (plastic). Here I am 2 years later w/ another broken water pump. Now, I'm looking into metal & electric water pump. VW makes a piss poor plastic water pump. I'm very frustrated about having to address this issue again, so soon at $800-$850

Cons: broken after 100k
Mileage: 100000 km
