I had to top off once and used Castrol Syntec, which is about $3.50 where I live.

Mobil 1 does make 5W-40. I use it. They label it Truck and SUV but don't let that throw you-just a marketing ploy. I switched from 0W-40 and my oil temps are slightly lower. My car is not winter driven so I don't need anywhere near a 0w. If I remember correctly 5w-40 is thinner than 0w-40 above freezing anyway.

I use Mobil 1 0w40 year round in Missouri, never had a problem.

Actually, I changed my 85 Jetta from Delo 400 15W40 dino to Rotella T Synthetic 5W40 at 275K miles. Yes, you can do it.

I just changed my oil with Rotella T 5W40 synthetic. It has the most recent CI-4+ rating on the bottle.

I use Amsoil Heavy Duty Diesel marine and truck oil.. it's preety good.. should be TDI friendly.

I have seen NO reason not to use Mobil 1 5w40 in a NON PD TDI motor. I know many that use it and no problems RELATED to oil. They do not coke up and the wear isn't there. I have used 5w30, not even 5w40 Mobil 1 in my VW/Audi 2.4L engine in my Volvos for years and have seen the best results

I have used both 0w40 and 5w40 Mobil 1 in a 02 Jetta for a long time with great results.

I've been using the Elf 505.01 oil. I used the Motul oil the 1st oil change. I like the Elf better from what I hear.
