Eurovan exhibited similar behavior. Start and run fine until.... engine would lose power. Pull over and would die. Restart would be nothing. Sit for an hour or so and could restart and could get the few miles to home. Next day things could be normal or a repeat of slow down and die. This went on for a couple of weeks. The last fail found the battery to be toast even though only a year old. OK, so new battery. All good for the next few days then the gremlins return. New battery is now no good. Determined the alternator had developed enough play that when warm would start to short creating more heat and more of a short allowing it to eat the battery. New alternator and another new battery and all is and has been good.

Pros: solved power loss issue
Cons: alternator shorted when warm
Vehicle: Volkswagen

OEM Volvo Alternator

The 2.4 in my 2006 S40 was stone cold reliable to 157k miles before I sold it. Needed a new alternator at about 145k but that was it. It\u2019s been 2 years and I still miss driving that car. The BEST front seats of any vehicle I\u2019ve driven or ridden in.

Pros: stone cold reliable
Cons: new alternator needed
Vehicle: Volvo S40
Mileage: 157000 km

I replaced my alternator with a Valeo unit. They manufacture the OEM part. Think it was 300$ or so, while OEM was almost double. Just a heads up, there’s almost zero clearance to remove the alternator. Really tight fit.

Pros: manufacture the OEM part
Cons: zero clearance, tight fit

I went and purchased an OEM alternator from Nissan and it is still not providing power. I have triple checked all the connections on the alternator, and have verified they are running 12V when the engine is shut off.

Cons: alternator not providing power
Vehicle: Nissan

TYC Alternator

Do NOT buy TYC brand alternators. They may be good for headlights and other parts, but I have gone through 2 NEW TYC alternators within the span of 6 months. I do redline my car every so often, however these should be built to handle such loads. Even though TYC was good with their warrantee to replace it, I still had to deal with all the shipping costs and labor to install the parts. not worth it. Ended up going with Denso remanufactured instead.

Cons: short lifespan, not durable, installation costs
Vehicle: MINI
