100% agree. And honestly CC2s have disappointing traction in packed snow/ice. Really doesn’t deserve a 3-peak rating. They were marginally batter than the Michelin MXM4 they replaced.
After running these tires for 50k miles and to their untimely demise, I didn’t think they were particularly special. I don’t think they handled very sharp, they don’t seem super “sticky”, and tread life is pretty average. Even in snow I don’t feel like they’re that much better than an average all season.
I’m also in Chicago, bought the same tires, and just assumed I was heavy footed and that’s why I was can’t break 3.0 mi/kwh even though I’m not that bad. Didn’t realize the tires themselves were less efficient. All that being said I home charge so by my math it’s like 80 dollars extra a year of electricity to avoid the more expensive tires.
Michelin AS are at least 10% worse efficiency than most OEM tires. So it's a double whammy, those new tires are probably 15% worse than the summers. Triple whammy with winter and it's a total 35% lost range. ... I'm in the minority but I don't buy Michelins and the 10% range hit they come with.
I did the same switch. I was averaging 4.0-4.1m/kwh. With the new Pilots i dropped to around 3.5. I will take the efficiency hit over the price of the Turanza tires. Four of the Michelins are the price of two of the T009s.
FWIW, Tire Rack tests showed that Pilot Sport A/S 4 had a big impact on EV efficiency.
I switched from the factory turanza summer tires to Michelin snow tires and saw my average drop by 0.5. I usually see 2.1-2.5 with snow tires vs 2.9 with summers.
I did get caught out by black ice last week and skidded a bit but then also got caught out in a different place in my mums car which is on Cross Climates, doing about 20mph both times. Both times I luckily got away with it but black ice is black ice, Cross Climates may give a slightly better chance of getting it back after skidding but not enough to be worth it imo.
I run Goodyear F1 Eagles in the summer, and in late October swap over to 3PMSF all-season Michelin cross-climates. The all-seasons have a much better wear tolerance for the occasions where we have 15C in the middle of winter. My Audi only has about 320 BHP, but in the snow / ice, I do not want to be using summer tyres. Equally in the summer, I want to be able to push it on rural roads in Devon without trashing all-seasons.
