I use conventional oil (10w-40) and personally change it every 2,000 with a new Mann or Mahle filter.

the oil filters I've always used are MANN
As for the smell, I would replace your cabin air filter. Your old one might have picked up moisture or some organic material. And if you get an option for it I would spend the few extra dollars and get a charcoal lined one. I should help with future smells.
The filter I got from the dealer was a Volkswagen/Mann filter.
I was getting the low oil pressure warning on my 2012 Passat. I changed the oil, dropped the oil pan and cleaned it and the pickup tube. They were already in really good shape. I changed the oil filter too of course. Anyway the light isn't coming on at all now.
I've used the Mann HU 719/6X filter for our Mk5 2.5L engines for more than a decade, without issues. Personally I'd shy away from Fram, at least for these cars -- I've heard bad things about failures.
The Mann its OE and has been working fine for years now.
Mann, or Hengst filters are usually what I use, I don't have anything bad to say about them. Quality filters.
Mann, Mahle and Hengst are OE. Mann is my personal choice.
I loath pulling out the Mann filter that I use on my AMU motor. Total pain especially when the thing is like 200 degrees. Barely fits through but it always gets out of there somehow.
