Windshield Tesla or Pilkington

Pilkington Windshield

I had my windshield replaced recently though my insurance, they tinted it (70% ceramic) for free and installed Pilkington glass for free. Not sure what the OEM is but Pilkington is aftermarket that's as good if not better than any OEM glass, many have reported it seems stronger where you wont get chips quite as easily.

Pros: as good as OEM, seems stronger

I replaced mine with an OEC. Didn't need to be recalibrated. Didn't have issues and it's been 2 years

Pros: no issues for 2 years, no recalibration

Pilkington glass is my go to for any older Toyota as they were the oem supplier for most cars. They\u2019ll also accept glass back as defective if it doesn\u2019t calibrate.

Pros: accept glass back
Cons: defective if doesn’t calibrate
Vehicle: Toyota Avalon

The glass we’re on now is a Pilkington, replaced and calibrated at a shop closer to home. This glass has lasted 3x longer than the others combined and recently took a strike from a nickel-sized rock :)

Pros: lasted 3x longer, resisted rock strike

Just had safelite do mine and I don’t recall the brand on the glass but it’s not Tesla. Looks fine to me no issues. Actually the previous windshield was replace by Tesla and the glass quality was not good. I almost took it back to them. Had small waves in it that produced a distortion at certain viewing angles. Then it cracked. It also had a lot of small chips in it way more than other vehicles in the past so maybe this new brand will be better

Pros: no issues
Cons: glass quality was not good

Don't get the Subaru glass. It sucks. It's thin and cracks easily. Try to get a Pilkington replacement if you can. Much better! My Subaru glass lasted less than a year before cracking. I've had the Pilkington for two now and have taken a handful of rocks off of it. Still looks good as new.

Pros: Pilkington much better, looks good
Cons: Subaru glass sucks, thin

Yeah, there is definitely some sort of weakness in the type of glass they use IMO. Picked up my MYLR (new 2023) in August last year…35K miles and 2 windshield replacements. Both times a small chip from a rock kicked up from a semi while traveling on the interstate walked all the way across the windshield within hours.

Cons: weak glass, 2 replacements, chips spread quickly
Mileage: 35000 km
