Windshield OEM Subaru or Pilkington

Pilkington Windshield

Also interesting to see the windshield glass is Pilkington and to my suprise, no VW logo. Can any European friends verify if this is an aftermarket windshield or original?

Pros: good European made
Cons: no VW logo
Vehicle: Volkswagen Corrado

Just replaced my windshield. Ordered OEM at the dealership, installer picked it up and installed it a few days later. No issues at all with the “nanny functions” and he did an awesome job. He let me watch and bug him the whole time.

Pros: awesome job, no issues

My 2018 Outback needed a new windshield already and Subaru says to use only Subaru OEM glass because it's made for the EyeSight cameras. They say it needs re-calibration also.

Pros: OEM glass made for cameras
Cons: needs re-calibration

The glass I chose was Pilkington. Don’t use Safelite unless they offer Sekurit or Pilkington. There is a difference in quality. I know Pilkington uses a laminate that reduces sound. They also had an option for a tint strip at the top but didn’t choose it. I had Safelite glass on my 04.5 Jetta GLI which I replaced with an OEM VW windshield and noticed an immediate reduction in wind and road noise and it is much more resistant to rock chips.

Pros: reduces sound, resistant to chips

I'm going to put this the best way I can....... I am a glass guy, and yes, I own a '16 GTI. I can tell you first hand that the glass in our cars is not perfect. However, I will also tell you that it is very difficult to keep curved glass free of distortion...With regards to the aftermarket, I would recommend Sekurit and Pilkington for our VWs, as they provide VW with a lot of OE product. So, the guidelines for production should be identical.

Pros: guidelines for production identical
Cons: difficult to keep free of distortion
Vehicle: Volkswagen

I have a 2019 with 40000km and the windshield just cracked for the second time this week. Wasn't even a big chip that caused it.

Cons: cracked twice, not from big chip
Vehicle: Subaru Forester
Mileage: 40000 km

I own a 2017 Forester. I’ve had to have the windshield replaced twice due to it cracking all by itself. The NHTSA reports are absolutely true. The second time it sat at the dealer for over 4 months because they were on back order. This is all due to Subaru using thin lightweight glass to increase fuel economy for CAFE numbers.

Cons: cracks easily, long back order, thin glass
Vehicle: Subaru Forester

CMBS cameras not properly calibrated since windshield replacement. Dealer believes glass marked “Honda” will fix calibration issue because “there is too much metal” in the Pilkington glass.

Cons: CMBS cameras not calibrated
Vehicle: Honda Accord
