We have a 22 OBW and are on our FOURTH windshield. The first ones we replaced with OEM. This last one we replaced with a Pilkington brand. Pilkington is still going strong and has lasted almost twice as long as the others combined.
Pilkington, the brand that makes Honda oem glass, was around $570 installed. It’s noticeably thicker than the oem R glass, which may be heavier and affect track time? But the quality is good. No distortion either.
Last glass we replaced with a Pilkington. It’s lasted twice as long (so far) as all the other windshields combined. It’s had a couple of similar ‘minor’ stone chips as what did in the OEMs. It’s still going strong.
Some Outback owners are already on their 3rd or 4th windshield in 2 years. So far the only solution is to demand a non OEM third party window replacement. Owners who can convince the insurance to use Pilkington glass for a replacement are having far less issues.
They did a great job with original BMW windshield.
Pilkington was a good 3rd party option that i ended up with and has held up very very well.
Just had my windshield replaced ~4 days ago at the local Windshield shop..(location in north-central Maryland). Aftermarket glass (Pilkington = ...large UK glass company, owned by Japanese NSG group, which I am familiar with from living in the UK for a number of years.) The windshield was installed for $375 on my 2017 Alltrack S... (so no recalibration/software updates).
I got a Pilkington glass and while the edges fit nicely the shape of the glass is less "bubbled" if you will. I used to be able to put my sunshield in between the dash and the windshield via a little space. With the new glass that space is gone and my sunshield no longer fits.
Hopefully you have better luck than I did. Had similar crack in a brand new 5 series(the car was only a few months old when it happened)and they wouldn\u2019t cover it. I had to go through my insurance and pay a small deductible. No other company did OEM BMW windshields in my area so I had to go the same dealership to get it done. Cost was around $2500
My BMW X5 windshield broke on the way home from the dealership. These windshields, or the construction of the car and the pressure on the glass is a huge problem. Folks all over the internet with the same issues.
