Water pump OEM Toyota or OEM Volkswagen

OEM Volkswagen Water pump

My original water pump lasted 115,000 miles. I saw the fluid levels subside over the years, but never actual signs of a leak. Eventually, the leak became obvious enough to diagnose.

Pros: lasted 115,000 miles
Cons: eventually started leaking
Mileage: 185074 km

Just wanted to follow up. Took it the dealer. Later that day, they diagnosed the water pump failure, got my green light for repair under CPO warranty (with $50 deductible), and by the end of the same day the car was treated to a new thermostat/water pump. They recycled the coolant they drained and topped it off - a flush would have been extra. Service advisor said they pressure tested everything when I asked about the cap and everything passed. Let's hope this holds up!

Pros: new water pump installed
Cons: coolant recycled

Generally the OEM plastic water pump only lasts as long as the timing belt interval. I wouldn't rule it out since the overflow water you might be seeing could just be water which is expanding or boiling as you increase the engine speed.

Pros: lasts timing belt interval
Cons: plastic water pump

When doing your own maintenance, a problem may arise in the event of a recall. My application under the water pump recall for my previous Tiguan (1st Gen - PQ) was denied even though it was replaced at a VW dealer because I did not show "convincing evidence" of having followed the scheduled coolant maintenance despite including my aftermarket receipts with miles and dates.

Cons: recall application denied

IDK - I was at 160K or so miles when I sold my '11 Tiguan. Sure, it ate a water pump, had the first gen timing chain tensioner replaced, needed cv axles, had a stuck fuel injector, lost an intake manifold, blew a turbo diaphragm, destroyed its engine mount bushings, struts and shocks went bad, needed seat covers replaced because they cracked and split and needed new tires every 25K or so...

Cons: ate a water pump
Mileage: 257495 km

The tech noticed the water pump was leaking slightly. All got repaired under VW warranty which was lucky as it was around £1800 otherwise I think. Anyway, the weird thing is the car always lost coolant from new - it would drop to the min level, but they couldn't find a fault when I mentioned it until they physically found the water pump leaking after 4 years and 40k miles. I think the pump is plastic which may not be ideal.

Cons: leaking, plastic construction
Mileage: 64374 km
