I got these to replace my stock tires back in February 2017: General Altimax RT43 Radial Tire - 215/60R16 95H Pretty affordable compared to stock and feel they perform better.
I just snagged from Craigslist a set of 17" wheels with Blizzaks on them with only 3,500 miles on the set for the ATS for only $425. Will be interesting seeing how the RWD performs with decent snows. I have Altimax Arctics on the BMW - combined with the AWD that car can go through most anything.
I'll be putting on the General Altimax Arctics that have gone on the wife's 3 for the last few years. They're unkillable. Too bad the car is still mediocre in the snow due to the light weight over the drive wheels and the traction (out of) control. The Frontier will need a decent set of A/T's to get through the winter. Been thinking the Cooper Discoverer AT/3. I've gotten almost 50k out of the stock tires, not bad IMO. The Mini will have to soldier on with the crappy all seasons that are on it right now. It will not likely see much, if any, snow.
I've run General Altimax Arctics for years. Probably gone through 3-4 different sets on various WRX/STI, MQB cars, always happy with them. I did get a used set of wheels with Michelin XI3's and they're pretty okay for my current MK7. Pretty ok in dry weather but I found they didn't do great compared to the Altimax on a prior Mk7 GTI.
I've got Altimax Arctics for both the Focus and BRZ. The Fit uses all-seasons all-season and does OK. I think the X-Ice 2's I had before the Generals had the edge on actual ice but both tires are excellent in the snow.
Well i went from 18s to 17s last winter... Originally i bought a set of Pirelli Sottozero3 225/40/18 on 18x7.5 wheels (might have been x8 i cant remember). The traction in cold was unreal and amazing, the price was not.
I had Pirelli p6000 for my 1st gen Clio 1.8, I loved them, I knew about the fact they last not as long, but I loved having so much grip.
Not because of F1, but when I bought full winter rims/tires I had Scorpion Ice & Snow for my X5M. They worked very well actually, and with the combination of the vehicle and those tires I never had any issues in the snow
Thursday was not a good day for one of my Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 tires. On the way to work a pothole got my front right side tire...When I got home I notice a nick in the rim, but not the damage to the tire...Called Tirerack, since I have the road hazard coverage and filed a claim.
Similar story: a lovely pothole seemingly gave me a flat (felt really jarring) on one of my Pirelli Sottozero 3s. Was flat within 10 minutes...Turns out the pothole actually cracked the rim (which caused the flat) and then the short time I drove on it mostly flat, had ruined the sidewall on the tire as well.
