Tires OEM Mazda or SUMITOMO

SUMITOMO Tires

I just put the conti viking contacts back on the s5 last week, and I need to get some winter tires for the sq5, I think I'm going with the sumitomo ice edge as we had them with the old a4 and they went through anything. I'll probably put them back on the s5 next year. We're in NH and go up north all lot for riding, plus we get decent snow and they're great for the $. Then it's wheel shopping for the sq5 for next year! It's so nice and easy to swap out winter/ summer wheels and tires.

Pros: went through anything, great for the $
Vehicle: Audi S5

OEM Mazda Tires

I got a Mazda 2 with good winter tires , I'm in Calgary. It costs me almost nothing on gas, and I finish the week with way more money in my pocket. in my 40 years of life I've learned a FWD car with decent rubber will handle winter good as any suv.

Pros: good rubber, handles winter
Vehicle: Mazda 2

I commuted 100 miles a day in my CX5 in snowy Maine. I had a 6speed manual transmission and snow tires and never had a problem.

Pros: no problems in snow

SUMITOMO Tires

I have Sumitomo Encounter ATs that I like pretty well. On road manners are great and no complaints off-road. They don't look as "cool" as some of the other ATs but they work just as well.

Pros: great on road manners, no complaints off-road, work well

Yeah, they're alright. Brother had a set on his 2016 Fiesta and didn't have much ill to say. He reckoned they were noisier than the original Goodyear's that came with the car but was happy with the traction.

Pros: happy with the traction
Cons: noisier than original
Vehicle: Ford Fiesta

I know this thread is almost a year old...But it was one of the first things to pop up in Google.   I bought a Challenger with the Sumitomo all seasons. 245/45r20. They were terrible tires. I figured I try to get 2 years out of them and it didnt happen. They were manufactured in March 2023.  Lasted 12,000 miles before one of them separated from the side wall in November 2024. I got a set of new tires at discount tire and they showed me that 2 of the other tires were starting exactly the same thing. Separating the tread from the side walls. All on the inside so I couldnt see it.  The car shook over 75mph...They wouldnt hold air pressure...They were downright dangerous in winter conditions. They were very noisy and wouldnt grip even on a hot road surface.

Cons: terrible tires, dangerous, noisy
Vehicle: Dodge
Mileage: 12000 km

I learned this for myself a long time ago when I had decided to go cheap for once and get some Sumitomo. I could feel the car's handling characteristics changed immediately (it felt like the back was "gliding" in the turns leaving the parking lot, which was probably sidewall flex).

Cons: handling characteristics changed
