Nokian Hakkapeliita R.
Fantastic in pretty much every way. Doesn't wear down too easy, handles snow and ice very well. I'm sure AWD helps. Might be a tad noisy on dry pavement but what snow tire isn't. Also they aren't cheap.
Nokians on her FWD CC now. It's a beast in the snow.
We've had ice and slush for the last few weeks, no problem for my TDI + 16" Nokians.
Can't go wrong with Nokians. On my '01 MK4 GTI, I used a set of Hakka 1s for 5 or 6 years; great tires. The Michelin Xice Xi2 are great too.
I paid $220 for 4 almost-brand-new Nokian WRG2 a month ago, installed. They were at about 90% remaining still. I'd rather get slightly-used good tires than brand-new pieces of sh*t. 100% happy with them so far.
Just drove my mk5 through a winter storm. (quite literally) It performed very well! It has identical handling characteristics to the mk6 Golf. As others have said, it strongly depends on the tires.
I bought myself a set of Nokian Hakkapellita R's and it makes a world of difference on snow and ice.
I get 37mpg city in my tdi, and the best mileage I ever got on my rabbit (2.5 mkv) was 32mpg with 15's and ultra low rolling resistance tires.
I ended up going onto the Nokian website and searched around for the right snow tires for an EV. They actually have them. They have them up to a 99 load rating which is much better than the 95s I had. Made a huge difference in handling...
I too was running Nokian Haks and it was almost uncanny how good the traction was not just in deep fresh but on compacted snow and ice. The EV is a very heavy vehicle and having 2/3 the weight (depending on cargo) over the drive wheels makes a very stable setup.
