Tires Nokia or IRONMAN

Nokia Tires

We put Nokian Hakkaapelitta R5’s on our 2023 Cooper SE (electric). It’s going to be fun to see the difference once the snow flies.

Pros: fun to see difference

Usually run the hakkapeliitta 9 studded when I used to drive a lot between New England states. Best tires I’ve had for winter. They will feel a bit marshmallowish until it gets really cold 32F and under. Getting closer to 0F they firm up a bit and drivability was amazing. Assuming roughly same for a similar tire

Pros: best tires for winter
Cons: marshmallowish until cold

I had these tires but studded on my RWD Cadillac CTS Coupe in Saskatchewan and absolutely flew through the snow and ice for a few years. They’re awesome.

Pros: flew through snow and ice

Not a WRX owner (came across my feed) but I've owned two sets of these R3's, a set of 7's for mom, and a set of C3's for the work van. Don't worry about winter traction ever again.

Nokians are the best.

Pros: best, worry-free winter traction

I'm a Michelin fan myself, but I've heard good things about Nokian. Judging by the tread pattern alone, that's a very agressive tire that'll likely work incredibly well on the WRX.

Pros: aggressive tire, works well

They are amazing. Nokian made the first ever winter tire, back in the 20s or 30s IIRC. I have them on all my Subarus and they make winter driving seem like summer for all “normal” driving applications, within reason (ie. driving like a normal person). For spirited driving yeah you’ll loose grip eventually but you’ll be surprised just how far these will go. Just remember how winter tires work. They accumulate snow on the treads and that grips way more than bare rubber. If you find yourself sliding on black ice and can aim for some snow, you’ll be surprised how much grip you can get back.. assuming you have the room for it. Anyway, they won’t make you completely invincible, but it’s about as good as you’re going to get!

Pros: amazing, winter driving like summer
Cons: lose grip eventually
Vehicle: Subaru

I love my Hakkas. I’ve had them on my 2017 WRX as well as several other cars. Very grippy in even the worst conditions.

Pros: very grippy, worst conditions

I am living in Alaska now, where studded tires are a common thing. After five years in Houghton, 3 winters w all-weather tires and 2 with winter tires and now with studded tires, driving a small-to-mid-sized SUV (VW Tiguan and Jeep Renegade), my verdict is that studded tires are overblown. I have the highest end studded tires- the Finnish ones made in Russia. They offer nothing over my all-weather tires. Nothing at all.

Pros: common in Alaska
Cons: overblown, no benefit
