I swapped my OEM tires for summer tires (Kumho Ecsta PS31), they provide much more grip and are a bit quieter though since they aren't LRR (Low Rolling Resistance) I do lose about 10% on range.

Pros: more grip, a bit quieter
Cons: lose about 10% range
Vehicle: Chevrolet

I've used Sumitomo and Kumhos performance summer tires with success - although the Kumho PA31's I put on the Fit have worn super fast and are now quite loud.

Pros: performance summer tires success
Cons: worn super fast, quite loud
Vehicle: Honda Fit

Kumho AT51 have been really good. Really quiet, great in winter, but feels like you driving on ice at high speeds (80mph) which is expected from these tires.

Pros: really quiet, great in winter
Cons: driving on ice at high speeds

Kumho Tires

I have the LX Platinums on my GLI. After 20,000+miles, they show little wear. Handling is definitely noticeably worse than the original summer tires, but not awful. Winter traction was surprisingly good.

Pros: little wear, good winter traction
Cons: worse handling than summer tires
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 20000 km
