I recently went through this with my 2012 Passat with 18s on it. I decided to try something different. I did the BF Goodrich Comp 2 A/S tires. Very reasonably priced, Z rated, and has extremely good ratings for dry, wet and snow. So far I am very pleased.
I recently changed wheels and tires on my jetta and I really enjoy the new look as well as the grip from the new tires. I went with a set of hankook v2 and they feel pretty solid so far.
The new Hankook V12 Evo2 is supposed to be better in terms of quietness and driveability. That may be a good buy on a budget.
I have Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2s for the winter and Hankook all-seasons for the summer.
Neuspeed RSe52 18x8 with 225/40/18 Hankook R-S3 (my current track setup)
I had Hankook Ventus V12s on my old IS250 after the factory Bridgestone ER33 (Now that is a $hit tire) wore out. They were great and half the cost of the ER33s.
I have Hankook IPike w203 (couple of years older model) and don't have a single complaint (very happy).
On my MK VI R I run Hanhook Icept Evo's in the winter, they are a "snow" tire winter rated and all but they are also geared towards high performance. I feel very confident in conrnrs and such when its dry unlike some snow tires that are mush and don't handle well. In a car like the R it would be a shae to use a tire that doesn't allow the car to handle well when roads are dry or just slightly wet. the Icepts are a great snow tire. I have had zero issues wit their performance on snowy surfaces especially with the AWD you can basically go WOT from a stop in the snow and have no traction issues.
I had the V12s on my Subaru - were great until I had to stop in the snow. I have the V12s on my S2000 - tried to move it into the garage last year after it had started to snow and had a very difficult time getting traction.
The biggest tire buying mistake I've made was a set of Hankook V12's(not the newer evo2 version, which should be better). Honestly had them off my car in three weeks, the only good qualities being comfort and noise level. Feedback was awful, overall grip in both dry and wet was just adequate, and the sidewalls seemed non-existent at a variety of pressure settings.
