I have 225s (Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT) and one of mine tipped over while changing tires and it got a scuff on it. Would have been worse with 205s.
My trailer had some junk "D" load rated tires that I replaced with "E" load rated Goodyear's and I saw improvement in handling and fuel economy.
I recommend the Goodyear Eagle GT. It was a much better performer than the Continentals that came with the car and they handled well in the rain.
I had GY Duratracs on my 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For the most part I really liked them. Not sure I would say that if they didn't see some offroad though because they were pretty noisy at highway speeds. In the snow and ice, they were amazing. Best tires I've ever had in that type of weather. Also did quite well in mud. The sidewalls were too soft for me to feel comfortable in the rocks though.
We have Duratracs on our LR3 and they have performed very well for us. They are just now getting noisier but have a lot of miles on them. Snow traction is really good, we've gone up hilly unplowed driveways with them and they went through it with no problem.
I have some Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor tires and they have been fantastic on my Xterra. I have about 50K miles on them and they still have some tread life left. Work really well in the snow and have been great when we get downpours.
I run goodyear eagle F1 asymmetric 2 on my car. Good for between £70-80 per tyre.
My friend had them on his fiesta st which was putting out 300ft lbs of torque and he had no issues. Also great in the rain.
I worked at Goodyear for 3 years and you are partially correct. Their quality isn't bad across the board, it is just not consistent. Some are great and last way longer than they should while others are just junk. I had 2 Ultra Grip Winters blow out on me a few hours apart (2 days after they were mounted).
The summer tires on my Mustang lasted a whole 12k miles - but they were staggered so they couldn't be rotated and were the worst tire ever put on at a factory (Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercars).
My experience with Goodyear is as an SA with BMW and VW. For a "high-quality" tire, they seemed to wear out fast and give unwanted vibrations sooner.
