Got my tires yesterday and went and got them mounted this morning. Liking them so far, hardly any stretch. I'll have my coilovers in a couple weeks then to see how they are on the car. 165/55/14 Federals on 14x6 wheels
I learned my lesson with the 165/45 15 federals... and will tell anyone here that can still find these to stack up while they are cheap/can find them.
I just bought a used VW and i had to put new tires on it already, someone at a dealer told me to go with the BARIUM Bravuris 2 (All Season tire) on mine 215/40/17" and with 10k+miles so far so good, very quiet, they seem to work better then most brands i know.
Federal Tire Quality- Just like any tire it truly depends on the model/size. I have had 165/45's and they are junk for daily driving. I am currently rolling on 205/40/16 Federal 595's and I love them.
formoza 165 45's.... i gotz 2 sets. they are great. and fairly cheap.
I got some Federal 215/40/18's from Josh @ Sterling Tire and I think they're great! They stretch well, have a bit of a lip protector and aren't loud. The traction is great, especially in the rain.
IIRC he said it dropped him like two more inches and it's VERY stiff.
I currently have these tires on my mk2 in 165-45r15 on some porsche phonedials. They are awesome because they exist in sizes that the general population doesn't care about and they are super cheap. The down side..... They have sh!tty grip and the sidewalls are made of spaghetti. They feel like poop in the turns. But hey, for how cheap they are I can't really complain.
One of the front tires is leaking a small amount of air (5-10psi/ month) out of the valve stem and one rear lip is bent but still holds air.
Yes the handling is worse! Yes I feel my ride is compromised when taking corners, braking, and overall feel for the road is reduced.
