Tires Continental or Maxxis

Continental Tires

I wanted to post my thoughts after a first winter drive with these Contis. They are stock 19" tires on my R and came with the vehicle. The VikingContact 7s have been more than excellent. Compared to the Conti TS830s, I definitely do not feel like I am at times running a summer tire in the winter. For this winter I feel completely confident in bad conditions like the X Ice 3 was. However, the HUGE plus is on dry conditions which happens a lot during winter here. I always felt the slight sponginess of the X Ice 3 (18s would have made a difference for sure), but these VikingContact 7s in dry are spectacular. They truly do everything in winter extremely well, and I would never think of buying another tire again...they are that good.

Pros: spectacular in dry conditions
Cons: none

Rating 5.0

I know it wasn’t included in the ask, but the Continental LX25 are a fantastic tire as well. We live in Northeast PA and these have been great all around. I’ve used Continentals for almost 20 years and haven’t been disappointed yet.

Pros: great all around

Maxxis Tires

Best all-round trail / enduro tires imho: Maxxis Minion DHF (front) and Minion DHR II (rear). I run 2.5 and 2.4, respectively. Get the WT (wide trail) variant if your rim inner width is 20+mm. Dual compound good for durability. The DHF has great breaking and turning control and last me 100+ hrs. The rear is great for techie climbs.

Pros: great breaking, turning control
Cons: Not super smooth for XC

Continental Tires

Not a fan of the OEM Continentals on my 2019 here in Western PA. Will switch to Vredesteins Quatrac Pro. I was pleased with them on the Tiguan and the wife\u2019s Volvo in winter driving and all around.

Pros: pleased with winter driving
Cons: not a fan
Vehicle: Volkswagen

Maxxis Tires

I purchased a new MTB with the Minion setup, and figured that since they’re so well renowned, I might as well give them a chance. After 250 miles, I’ve decided that I despise these tires more than anything else I’ve ever ridden. The DHF has NO CORNERING GRIP. I have washed out more times on this tire than I have in what feels like my entire riding career prior to using the DHF. I’ve pinch flatted two DHRs. One sidewall snake bite, one puncture straight through the middle of the tread. Lastly, they have god-awful climbing grip.

Cons: no cornering grip, poor climbing grip
Mileage: 402 km
